Last week, a 25-year-old man became the third openly gay person to be murdered in Tampa, Florida in less than two months.
Dontae Lampkins’ body was discovered on Thursday in Seminole Heights, a historically gay-friendly neighborhood. According to police, he was shot dead and suffered “upper body trauma.”
Lampkins’ family suspects he was targeted for being a gay man. His sister said:
“He was him. He was himself. He was outspoken. His sexuality meant everything to him. It’s either ’be who you are or don’t be no one at all.’”
His mother described him as “so joyous, [the kind of person that] could put a smile on your face no matter how bad your day was.”
The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of Lampkins’ memorial service.
