For the third year in a row, Hallmark is featuring a gay couple in its Valentine’s Day advert.
As Teen Vogue points out, the advert makes “the typically heteronormative holiday a way more inclusive.”
The advert features Spencer Stout and Dustin Reeser getting engaged. The couple’s engagement went viral after Spencer staged a flash mob of friends and family in Home Depot.
Fast becoming one of the saner destinations for political and social commentary, Teen Vogue notes:
This is the third year Hallmark has shown a same-sex couple in its ad, which shows that LGBTQ people are becoming part of the media landscape — and that’s a huge deal. While we used to only see heterosexual couples (typically of the same race and ability), the growing acceptance of all kinds of people in all kinds of relationships is an actual reflection of our society. The reality is all kinds of people fall in love, and that’s great. The ad drives that point home by showing old couples, young couples, a couple in which one person has a disability, and more. The idea is to show there’s “no ordinary love story,” and we’re totally here for that.
